I-495/ Dulles Toll Road Interchange Information Page

VDOT and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) initiated a detailed review of the proposed design and operations for the Capital Beltway HOT Lanes Project ramps relative to the Dulles Toll Road (DTR)/Dulles International Airport Access Road (DIAAH) and the I-495 Interchange.  Efforts are underway to provide new and revised access at the interchange of DTR/DIAAH and I-495. The new proposed ramps will restore direct access to/from the DIAAH as had been originally provided for almost 25 years, until 1984 when the DTR was constructed.

As part of the Capital Beltway HOT Lanes Project, construction is now underway for Segments 1 and 2. This work is expected to continue into late 2012. Motorists are currently shifted at the eastbound Dulles Toll Road as they approach the exits for I-495 to one lane exiting to I-495 north and two lanes exiting to I-495 south. This traffic pattern is expected to be in place for until late 2012.  Crews have cleared the area along the eastbound Dulles Toll Road to I-495 south to shift the exit ramp out to a new alignment by spring 2011. Crews shifted lanes along the westbound Dulles Toll Road near the I-495 interchange to create additional room to advance work and place pavement.

  • Behind the barriers, crews are working to install new drainage, relocate utilities and place pavement for upcoming traffic shifts.
  • Complete selective clearing and grading
  • Continue drainage work and installation of box culverts and pipes
  • Continue pile driving for new bridge and ramp connections.
  • Construct bridge piers and abutments
  • Construct retaining walls
