Bike/Walk
If you’re looking for a way to get around town and get some exercise too, these are the travel options for you. Most communities in Northern Virginia have been built with bikers and walkers in mind—there are paths, trails and bike lanes all across the region. While walking and biking are obviously well suited for shorter trips, you can also combine them with public transportation to go farther. Take your bike onto an area bus, and you’ll be amazed at how much ground you can cover, no car required.
Slugging
Slug your way to work, or pick one up. Slugging, also known as “instant carpooling” or “casual carpooling” is a unique form of commuting. It involves drivers stopping to pick up passengers (called “slugs”) on their way into the D.C., Arlington, Pentagon or other destinations. Pickup points are park-and-ride lots or other designated areas. To learn more about slugging, visit www.slug-lines.com.
Toll Roads
The Northern Virginia region has two toll road facilities: the Dulles Toll Road and the Dulles Greenway. Click here for more information.
