CONSTRUCTION TEAMS WORKING
TO EASE CHOKEPOINT AT TOLL ROAD AND BELTWAY
ALEXANDRIA— The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will make additional adjustments to the traffic pattern that took effect two weeks ago on the eastbound lanes of the Dulles Toll Road approaching the Beltway.
The following adjustments to the lane configuration will be made to help relieve the construction related congestion:
• The right lane of the eastbound main toll plaza will be reserved for EZ-Pass users so motorists bound for I-495 will not have to cross several lanes to access the Beltway.
• The left lane approaching the Beltway will be extended 1,000 feet to assist motorists merging from the left side of the Toll Road.
• Signage will be improved prior to the toll plaza.
Construction teams from VDOT, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and Fluor-Transurban (HOT Lanes project) met yesterday to re-work the traffic pattern. These adjustments will be phase in beginning Monday, June 20, and continue over the next few weeks.
“We are doing everything possible to reduce the lengthy delays motorists are experiencing” said John D. Lynch, Regional Program Manager for VDOT’s Megaprojects. “While there will still be construction-related delays, the adjustments should bring some relief. We apologize for the aggravation this has caused.”
Motorists are urged to commit early to their travel lane to reduce weaving just past the main toll plaza.
