The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is addressing delays that have occurred along I-495 south at I-66 west due to recent traffic pattern changes. In an effort to ease congestion in this area, VDOT will restore Exit 49, I-495 south to I-66 west from one ramp lane to two lanes. A fifth lane along I-66 west will also be opened to provide more travel capacity.

One lane on I-66 west will remain open as crews restripe the pavement markings and move barriers to install the new fifth lane. All lanes will be reopened by 6 a.m.
Overnight detour: Motorists using Exit 49, I-495 south to I-66 west will be directed to continue along I-495 south to Exit 52B, Little River Turnpike east (Route 236), ride the loop ramps and follow signage to I-495 north to Exit 49, I-495 north to I-66 west.
Crews will modify I-66 west in this area by reducing lane widths, removing the shoulders for a short section and shifting traffic near the Dunn Loring Metrorail Station. Motorists are encouraged to use caution as this new traffic pattern will be in place until fall 2012.
Should inclement weather cancel this work it will be rescheduled for Friday night, Feb. 24 or Saturday night, Feb. 25, weather permitting.
