I-495 HOT LANES CONSTRUCTION WILL IMPACT NIGHTTIME BELTWAY TRAVEL


Ongoing steel beam placement and bridge demolition – Multiple Interchange Closures

ALEXANDRIA— The Virginia Department of Transportation announces several overnight travel impacts scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 12 through Saturday, Dec. 18, as part of the Capital Beltway High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes Project. Motorists should expect delays and add an additional 30-60 minutes to their travel time through the area. The following locations will be impacted: 

  • I-495 south at Leesburg Pike (Route 7) Complete Nighttime Closure: Each night, Monday, Dec. 13 though Thursday, Dec.16, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., crews will close all lanes of I-495 south at Route 7 for steel bridge beam placement. Motorists will be detoured to Exit 47A, to Route 7 west and cross over onto Route 7 east, back to I-495 south.
  • I-495 north and south at Washington & Old Dominion Trail (W&OD): Each night, Monday, Dec. 13 though Tuesday, Dec.14, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. crews will close three I-495 north and south lanes, one lane open, near the W&OD Trail overpass. Temporary I-495 north and south stoppages for up to 40 minutes after midnight for steel bridge beam placement will occur. The W&OD trail crosses over the Beltway near the I-66 interchange. 
  • I-495 south at I-66 Complete Nighttime Closure: Each night, Monday, Dec.13 through Saturday, Dec.18, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., crews will close all lanes of I-495 south at I-66 for bridge work. Motorists will be detoured to Exit 49, I-66 west, to Nutley Street, follow detour signage around to I-66 east, back to I-495 south.
  • I-495 north and south at Gallows Road (Route 650): Each night, Monday, Dec. 13 through Saturday, Dec.18, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., crews will close three lanes of I-495 north and south at Gallows Road with temporary Beltway stoppages for up to 30 minutes after midnight for steel bridge beam placement.
  • I-495 north and south at Little River Turnpike (Route 236): Each night, Monday, Dec. 13 through Saturday, Dec.18, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., crews will close three lanes of I-495 north and south at Route 236 with temporary Beltway stoppages for up to 30 minutes after midnight for steel bridge beam placement.
  • I-495 west/north at I-395 Complete Nighttime Closure: Each night, Monday, Dec. 13 through Friday, Dec.17, from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., crews will close all lanes of I-495 west/north. Motorists will be detoured to I-395 north, to exit 2B, Edsall Road west, follow detour signage back to I-395 south to exit 1D, I-495 north (toward Tysons Corner.  Traffic seeking access to Franconia Rd. (Rt. 644) should use exit 1B.
