CAPITAL BELTWAY HOT LANES:
AFTER LABOR DAY EXPECT DETOURS, TRAFFIC SHIFTS
The I-495 High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes project continues construction activities along the 14-mile corridor from the Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road. Motorists should expect overnight closures, detours and traffic pattern changes along the Beltway as crews demolish and rebuild bridges.
I-495 northbound traffic shift at Arlington Boulevard (Route 50)
On or about Sept. 20, crews will shift all four northbound lanes to a new bridge over Route 50. Prior to the traffic shift, overnight lane closures in this area are expected for pavement markings and tie-in. Motorists are encouraged to use caution traveling through the new traffic pattern. Once I-495 north traffic is shifted to the new bridge, crews will begin demolition of the old I-495 north bridge over Route 50.
I-495 southbound closure at I-66
Through Sept. 22, I-495 south will close at I-66 Monday-Saturday nights for crews to demolish the old I-66 eastbound bridges over the Capital Beltway. Crews will set up lane closures at 9:30 p.m. and by midnight all lanes on I-495 south will be closed. The I-66 westbound ramp to I-495 south and the left I-66 eastbound HOV ramp to I-495 south/north will also be closed overnight with detours.
For motorist safety traffic will be detoured from I-495 south to I-66 west, to Exit 62, Nutley Street and turn around to I-66 east to I-495 south. The detour may add an additional 15-20 minutes onto a trip during the peak overnight hours between 10 p.m. and midnight. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
