NEW LANE OPENS ON I-95 SOUTH
FROM FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY TO ROUTE 1
10-20 minute savings expected during p.m. rush
ALEXANDRIA—A fourth lane on I-95 south from the Fairfax County Parkway to Route 1 has opened.
The new lane adds much-needed capacity to the five-mile stretch of highway and is expected to save commuters between 10 and 20 minutes during the evening rush hour on the southbound trip from the Springfield Interchange to the Occoquan River.
“Drivers on I-95 south will feel the benefit of this additional lane immediately,” said VDOT project manager H.S. “Charlie” Warraich, “It is the best traffic improvement in this corridor since the completion of the Springfield Interchange. ”
VDOT is adding a fourth lane to I-95 in each direction from the Fairfax County Parkway to Route 123. The entire project will be completed in late 2011. In December 2009, VDOT opened the northbound lane. The final piece of the I-95 widening project, a fourth lane in each direction on the Occoquan River bridge, will be completed by late summer 2011.
Overnight lane closures on I-95 south will continue this fall while crews mill and pave sections of the roadway. Final sections of sound walls and additional lighting will be completed before the end of the year.
