Capital Beltway HOT Lanes: Early October project milestones
Expect detours, lane closures and bridge demolition

ALEXANDRIA— Beginning the first week of October, the Capital Beltway I-495 High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes project will advance construction activities along the Beltway from the Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road. All closures are weather permitting.

Scheduled work includes:

I-495 north and south at Braddock Road (Route 620) Set Bridge Steel

On or about October 4, crews will start setting steel bridge beams for a new bridge over I-495 north and south at Braddock Road, Exit 54. Work will occur Mon. through Fri. nights from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. to mid-November.  Exit ramp and closures of the Beltway are expected.  Traffic will be redirected to the exit ramps to cross over Braddock Road to continue onto I-495. Police will be onsite to direct traffic.

Westpark Drive Bridge over Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) Concrete Bridge Deck

Beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday night, October 5, the Westpark Drive bridge over Route 123 near Tysons Corner Center will be closed for crews to pour a concrete deck.  The bridge will reopen by 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, weather permitting. See below detours.

Detour Routes:

  • From Tysons Corner Center to Westpark Drive: continue from the Ring Road to turn right onto International Drive, cross over Route 123 and turn right onto Galleria Drive, back to Westpark Drive
  • From Galleria Drive to Tysons Corner Center via Westpark Drive Bridge: turn onto Tysons Boulevard, turn right onto Route 123 and turn left onto International Drive into Tysons Corner Center

I-495 south at Arlington Boulevard (Route 50) Traffic Shift

On or about October 6, crews will shift all four I-495 southbound lanes to the right onto a new bridge over Route 50.  Prior to the traffic shift, overnight lane closures in this area are expected for pavement markings and tie-in. Motorists are encouraged to use caution traveling through the new traffic pattern. Once I-495 south traffic is shifted to the new bridge, crews will begin demolition of the old I-495 south bridge over Route 50. Demolition is expected to take approximately 4-6 weeks.
