I-66 EAST AT I-495 REOPEN BY 2 P.M. SUNDAY, AUGUST 29
New traffic pattern in effect – Work continues on HOV ramp Monday morning
ALEXANDRIA— All three eastbound lanes on I-66 at I-495 and the Nutley Street ramps to I-66 east reopened by 2 p.m. Sunday, August 29, more than 15 hours ahead of schedule according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
I-66 eastbound motorists approaching I-495 are urged to use caution in this area as the lanes are shifted slightly to the right onto new bridges over the beltway. Work has resumed on the left HOV exit ramp at 9:30 a.m., Monday morning, August 30 as noted below.
Work progressed more quickly than expected through the weekend as cool overnight temperatures allowed heat from the 4,500 tons of asphalt used to build the new pavement approaches to dissipate sooner than expected.
HOV Traffic Pattern Changes
- By 2 p.m. Sunday, August 29 to 9:30 a.m. Monday, August 30, eastbound I-66 HOV motorists traveling to I-495 North/South should stay to the left to exit.
- HOV motorists heading towards Washington D.C. must ride through the traffic shift over the new bridges to continue on eastbound I-66.
- Monday, August 30 at 9:30 a.m. until 5 a.m. Tuesday, August 31, the left lane and left HOV exit will close for crews to complete the left HOV exit ramp tie in. Traffic exiting to I-495 will be directed to take the right general purpose exits. Two right through lanes will remain open.
- By 5 a.m. Tuesday, August 31, the left HOV exit to I-495 North/South will reopen. Motorists are encouraged to use caution on the new left HOV exit expected to be in place for the next year.
The weekend work was apart of rebuilding the complex I-66/495 interchange that will provide both HOT/HOV and general purpose connections between 66 and 495. The future interchange will be safer and easier to navigate with smoother transitions from one interstate to the other. The 14-mile Capital Beltway HOT Lanes Project, between the Springfield Interchange to just north of the Dulles Toll Road will bring HOT/HOV to the beltway when it opens in late 2012.
