Lane shift makes way for rail station construction along Route 7
MCLEAN -- Eastbound Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) has been shifted between Spring Hill Road and Route 123. This work makes way for a new Metrorail station and a widened Route 7.
The lane will shift prepares the area for construction of the new Tysons Central 7 Metrorail Station, which will be built in the median of Route 7. Click on the map on the right for details.
Dulles Corridor Metrorail construction crews have been preparing for this significant widening of Route 7 for several years. They have relocated and buried 21 types of utilities, removed of service roads, relocated traffic signals and eliminated mid-block left turn lanes. Widening Route 7 is necessary to create space for the one of five new rail stations during the first phase of this project.
Pedestrians can use new temporary sidewalks along this stretch of eastbound Route 7. Station construction is scheduled to begin in mid to late June.
This traffic shift will remain in place for the next three years.
Later this summer, a similar lane shift will take place on Route 7 in the area of Spring Hill and Tyco roads to make room for construction of the Tysons West Metrorail Station. All five stations will be under construction by late Fall, 2010.
The Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project is a 23-mile extension of the existing Metro system, providing service from East Falls Church through Tysons Corner, Reston, Herndon and Washington Dulles International Airport to Ashburn. The Metropolitan Washington Airports-Authority owns and manages this two-phase project.
